Miami, FL

When searching for office spaces around the greater Miami area, it became readily apparent to Overhead that much of Miami’s historic building stock had been demolished or was in the process of renovation. As a practice that is deeply routed in the vernacular lessons given by history and documentation of older structures, Overhead sought out one of the last original towers in Downtown Miami to headquarter our firm.

The previous tenant of the space had installed a 3’ drop ceiling and a number of non structural partitions that had divided and secluded each part of the office from itself. Our response was to create a sequence of spaces beginning with a library, followed by our main working space, culminating in a meeting room overlooking Biscayne Bay.

It was our intention to make the office appear domestic, a space in which one could theoretically consider “working from home.” The soft glow of overhead pendants and floor lamps gives the space a homey feel. Pastel tones of yellow and green fabric create a series of “islands” on a carpet of deep blue. It was with care that these islands represent our condition of Miami, one whose aerial overhead view is defined by an urban archipelago.
